More than a third of 18-35s in Europe watch their favourite sports teams online
"Across Europe, the Web has surpassed TV as the primary platform for 18-to-35 viewers to watch their favorite sport, according to new research conducted by Havas Sport & Entertainment for the Global Sports Forum Barcelona.
A full 36.1% of this prized demographic sign in online to watch their favorite sport or team play on a weekly basis, compared with just 32.1% who do so on television. This marks a significant shift from a year ago, when similar research conducted by Havas found the Europeans of prime age still preferred their sports on a TV.
Advertisers, content providers, broadcasters, rightsholders and athletes will all be affected, according to Lucien Boyer, President and CEO of Havas Sport & Entertainment and General Commissioner of the GSFB.
“The implications of this are huge and suggest the broadcast sales model for sport needs to be carefully considered in the future,” Boyer warned. “Whilst TV will clearly continue to remain of enormous importance, the younger generation choose to consume sport in a number of ways. The key now is to be a content provider that can satisfy the demands of sports fans across all platforms.”"

eCommerce levels for European countries in 2011
"E-commerce is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe. The statistics are problematic as state statistical research organisations tend to underestimate the size of the sector. Based on CRR research commissioned by Kelkoo, 2011 online sales in the UK were £50.34 billion (€59.4 billion) or 12.0% of UK retail trade. In 2008, online was equivalent to only 8.6% of retail sales.
For Europe (including UK), the total market was worth £169,880 million (€200.52 bn) in 2011 (up from £143,720 million [€169.63 bn] last year). Online retailers in only three countries, UK, Germany and France accounted for 71% of European online sales. In 2008, online sales in Europe were £101,840 million (€117.84 bn).
Online sales in Germany were £38.18 billion (€45.07 billion), 9.0% of retail sales (+13% over 2010). In France, where online retailers grew at one of the fastest rates in Europe, 2011 online sales were £32.75 billion (€38.66 billion) or 7.3% of retail sales (+24% over 2010)."

Spotify is the second single largest source of digital music revenue for labels in Europe
"Artists can — and do — receive very substantial revenues from Spotify, and as Spotify grows, these revenue streams will naturally continue to grow. Spotify is now the second single largest source of digital music revenue for labels in Europe (IFPI, April 2011) and we’ve driven more than $150 million of revenue to rights holders (ie whoever owns the music, be it artists, publishers or labels) since our launch three years ago.”"

120m smartphones were shipped in Q3 2011, up 49% Y-o-Y
"Canalys today released its Q3 2011 country-level smart phone shipment estimates to clients, revealing that HTC has taken the top spot in the US market. At the same time, a particularly strong performance from Samsung saw it become the world’s number one smart phone vendor. Overall, the worldwide market grew substantially: 49% year-on-year to 120.4 million units.
With phenomenal year-on-year and sequential growth of 252% and 60% respectively, Samsung shipped 27.3 million smart phones under its own brand to capture a 23% share, becoming the number one vendor in APAC, Western Europe and Latin America, ahead of Nokia, Apple and RIM respectively. With well-regarded products, such as the Galaxy S II, and significant marketing campaigns, the vendor registered the second highest quarterly shipment total in the market’s history, behind only Nokia’s Q4 2010 performance. In addition, Samsung shipped an estimated 500,000 units worldwide under the Google and T-Mobile brands.
In the United States, the world’s largest smart phone market, HTC shone in Q3 2011, edging out Apple and Samsung to become the leading vendor. HTC shipped 5.7 million smart phones in the US under its own brand, giving it almost a quarter of the market, as well as an estimated 70,000 units under the T-Mobile brand. ‘However you count it, HTC has become a deserved leader in the US smart phone market,’ said Palo Alto-based Canalys Vice President and Principal Analyst, Chris Jones. ‘This is an awesome achievement for HTC, which has built a premium brand in a highly competitive market in just a few short years. It now has a strong range of 4G Android products, with devices ranged by each of the major carriers, and offers some of the most compelling and differentiated products found on the platform today.’"

Online display ad spend rose 21% in Europe in 2010
"The headline number for display in Europe is now €5.8 Billion – a 21.1% growth on last year’s figures. It’s difficult to acertain how much traditional display has really grown, as there is no break out numbers for Facebook. I think the IAB will have to do this next year – so we can a real feel for how the different channels are faring in terms of media spend. I have produced a chart of the top performing countries in the market. The UK and Germany are way out ahead, clocking in at just over 1 billion euro each. France comes in at third – closely followed by Italy."

Note on methodology & sample - "EMS 2011 represents the highest-earning 13% of the population in 20 markets across Western and Central Europe. Refinements to the design of this, the 16th release of EMS, include consumption of media brands via mobile applications and mobile websites. This is the first year that an EMEA-wide set of data, combining results from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, has enabled at-a-glance comparisons between markets as diverse as the Czech Republic and Cameroon, mirroring the multi-region planning priorities of many advertisers. From next year, we’ll be including Turkey too."

Apple devices account for 20% of mobile ad impressions in Europe (estimate)
"The pull of Apple in mobile is undeniable, with the brand regularly leading brand surveys and the term fanboy all but synonymous with its products. Today, some stats out from the mobile advertising network InMobi shows just how much the company’s products get used for advanced mobile data services compared to other devices. On the strength of just three products—the iPhone, iPod and iPad—Apple ranks as the most popular maker on the company’s mobile ad network in Europe, beating out companies that in unit terms have much bigger market shares, like Nokia and Samsung.
The data, compiled in the month of May, charts ad impressions on the InMobi ad network, which says that it serves 35.7 billion monthly mobile advertising impressions worldwide, with 3.8 billion of those in Europe.
InMobi notes that a lot of the growth for Apple, which now has a 19.5 percent share of the market (a rise of 6.3 percent over the past three months), was led by ad impressions on the iPad. The tablet had 80 million impressions during the month in the region, making it the sixth most-popular mobile device in Europe.
Android’s share has gone down by 6.1 percent in the past three months, although it still remains the biggest mobile platform in terms of ad requests—that is, taking all Android handset makers’ impressions collectively. And iPhone still remains the single most popular device."

Spotify has one million paying subscribers
"It seems like only yesterday we were hatching ideas for a new music service in a tiny office-cum-apartment with a broken coffee machine, and the party we threw having reached one million users almost two years ago today was one to remember.
So it’s with a sense of real pride and excitement that we can announce a new milestone today, having welcomed our millionth paying subscriber to the service. It’s a testament to our fantastic users who continue to support us and spread the Spotify word, either by telling friends or sharing some of the 200 million playlists that you’ve put together so far."
Source: Spotify blog, 8th March 2011
Note - "Spotify is currently only available in Sweden, Spain, Norway, Finland, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland the Premium service was offered until July 2009, but never the free version. Currently only customers with credit cards issued in one of the above-mentioned launch countries can buy a Premium account."

Mobile web users tend to visit traditional sites rather than mobile-specific sites
"According to GfK, mobile internet traffic begins to grow rapidly each morning about 5am, and reaches a peak at 4:30pm. “The usage differs considerably during the day and sometimes even within the same hour. For example, 7.45am can have up to 30-40% more traffic than 7.15am on the same day.”
GfK also revealed several other interesting bits of information about the browsing habits of these 200,000 consumers, including:
- the average smartphone user makes up to 24 web sites visits per day
- a vast majority of the sites visited are to traditional websites and not mobile specific sites
- the Top 50 websites constitute only about 40% of all visits
One site which stood out because of its popularity is Facebook. In every country that GfK measured, they reported that the popularity of Facebook is “consistently remarkable”. In fact, they identified a identify a group of mobile users where Facebook is almost the exclusive site visited."

Methodology:
"GfK analyzed the mobile activity of over 200,000 mobile internet consumers in three European countries (note - it doesn't say which 3) using GfK’s unique ‘Network Intelligence Solution’ (GfK NIS). This new research tool analyzes a mobile operator’s IP traffic to determine the mobile internet browsing behaviour of large numbers of individuals.
Also, the NIS tool measures all websites visited using mobile internet regardless of the device; mobile phones, Smartphones, PC tablets and 3G Cards are all monitored."
