eCommerce levels for European countries in 2011

"E-commerce is one of the fastest growing markets in Europe. The statistics are problematic as state statistical research organisations tend to underestimate the size of the sector. Based on CRR research commissioned by Kelkoo, 2011 online sales in the UK were £50.34 billion (€59.4 billion) or 12.0% of UK retail trade. In 2008, online was equivalent to only 8.6% of retail sales.
For Europe (including UK), the total market was worth £169,880 million (€200.52 bn) in 2011 (up from £143,720 million [€169.63 bn] last year). Online retailers in only three countries, UK, Germany and France accounted for 71% of European online sales. In 2008, online sales in Europe were £101,840 million (€117.84 bn).
Online sales in Germany were £38.18 billion (€45.07 billion), 9.0% of retail sales (+13% over 2010). In France, where online retailers grew at one of the fastest rates in Europe, 2011 online sales were £32.75 billion (€38.66 billion) or 7.3% of retail sales (+24% over 2010)."

Online game Bigpoint generated revenues of over €2m in 4 days on sales of just one virtual item

"German online games publisher and developer Bigpoint made over 2 million euros of revenue this month on a single in-game item purchase.
The company's free-to-play MMO space shooter DarkOrbit, which launched in December 2006, has seen 66 million registered users in total over its five year life.
Earlier this month, BigPoint sold a special in-game item called 'The 10th Drone', which cost 1,000 euros to purchase, for a total of four days.
Simon Davis, producer on DarkOrbit, has now told Gamesbrief founder and Gamasutra contributor Nicholas Lovell that over 2,000 of these items were sold, meaning that over 2 million euros was spent on this single item over the course of four days."

Online display ad spend rose 21% in Europe in 2010

"The headline number for display in Europe is now €5.8 Billion – a 21.1% growth on last year’s figures. It’s difficult to acertain how much traditional display has really grown, as there is no break out numbers for Facebook. I think the IAB will have to do this next year – so we can a real feel for how the different channels are faring in terms of media spend. I have produced a chart of the top performing countries in the market. The UK and Germany are way out ahead, clocking in at just over 1 billion euro each. France comes in at third – closely followed by Italy."

Nearly 2/3 of phones bought in Germany are smartphones

"With more than one mobile phone per person in Germany, it is a strong mobile market, but the potential for growth exists. German mobile consumers are connected and getting smarter. Nearly two out of every three (63%) mobile purchases in Germany are smartphones. Today, 30 percent of Germans own a smartphone, compared with 45 percent in the U.K., 40 percent in the U.S., and 36 percent in Russia.
And with 83 percent of German smartphone users contract-billed by a carrier, higher monthly spending patterns follow: users spend an average of 1.5 more than feature phone users on their bills. The advanced user interface is also prompting more sophisticated communication. Over 65 percent of smartphone owners use email and half are active social network users."

Note - these reports do not include Japan
"Notes on reporting methodology:
-  These reports are based on the total number of QRcode, Datamatrix and UPC/EAN scans recorded by the i-nigma system during the relevant periods. Because of i‑nigma’s prominence in many markets worldwide, we believe that these numbers are likely to be indicative of global mobile barcode activity
-  The reports do not include activity in Japan, which is known to be well ahead in popularity and usage of mobile barcodes
-  For better representation of global open market trends, the reports specifically exclude the activity of i‑nigma-based solutions that are used by our vertical customers
-  Top 5 growing countries are from the top 20 countries in mobile barcodes usage during May/2011"
