How digital media & technology is changing retail behaviour

"Across most categories of goods, the majority of respondents reported a preference to purchase items online rather than at a physical outlet. In the UK 74% percent of consumers said they were more likely to buy flights and vacations online (globally 70%), 77% prefer to buy CDs, DVDs, books and video games online (65% globally).
However, the majority of respondents said they prefer to purchase luxury goods in store and four in ten consumers still seem to shun online grocery shopping. These trends are particularly evident in the Americas where more than three quarters of respondents said they would book a flight online, but only 21 percent said they were more likely to buy groceries online.
The survey reveals the extent to which smartphones and tablets are changing shopping behaviour. When shopping at retail outlets, 45% of UK respondents said they now use their mobile devices to locate the nearest store, 32% to research products and services, 30% for online coupons and one in 5 (19%) scan in barcodes to for product information. Globally 41% research products & services and almost a quarter pay with their mobile devices.
When buying products or services the majority of customers in the UK and globally consult feedback and ratings pages on the internet or get information on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Monitoring and managing third party information sources will therefore be a key element of any digital sales strategy."
Methodology:  "Consumers and Convergence V: The Converged Lifestyle [hyperlink], KPMG’s survey of consumer trends in digital technology, communications and e-commerce surveyed 9,600 consumers in 31 countries ranging in age from 16 to over 65."

28% of American adults use mobile or social location-based services, including mobile maps

"More than a quarter (28%) of all American adults use mobile or social location-based services of some kind. This includes anyone who takes part in one or more of the following activities:
28% of cell owners use phones to get directions or recommendations based on their current location—that works out to 23% of all adults.
A much smaller number (5% of cell owners, equaling 4% of all adults) use their phones to check in to locations using geosocial services such as Foursquare or Gowalla. Smartphone owners are especially likely to use these services on their phones.
9% of internet users set up social media services such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn so that their location is automatically included in their posts on those services. That works out to 7% of all adults."

Britain's top tourist attractions get 5 times as many checkins on Facebook as on Foursquare

"The data, which uses all the check-ins at UK attractions since November last year, found that check-ins on Facebook to the top 50 UK attractions totalled 955,437, while check-ins on Foursquare reached 176,724.
Betapond, the agency that developed the Love UK Top 50 Places app, said the data showed that Facebook was by far the check-in method of choice for the mainstream web audience.
The data is taken from a campaign VisitBritain launched in November last year to find the top UK attraction, based on location-based check-ins (nma.co.uk 8 November 2011). The aim for the tourist board was to add a competitive element, encouraging attractions to promote check-ins to its visitors. Over the period of the campaign the Love UK page has gained over 450,000 Likes and helped to accumulate over 1m check-ins at the top 50 UK attractions.
The top UK attraction is currently The O2 stadium with 72,817 Facebook check-ins and 7764 check-ins on Foursquare."

There are more than 500,000 businesses using Foursquare

"Two weeks ago, we passed a pretty big milestone on foursquare, with over 10,000,000 people in the foursquare community. Last week, we hit another one that excites us just as much: we now have over half a million merchants on foursquare."

Foursquare has 10m members

More stats on an infographic (dread word!) here.  However they're pretty short on meaningful stats, like the ones that Facebook provide.  E.g. How many users are active per day?  How many external apps use the API?  How many checkins have been made?  & so on.

Stats on bog posts, tweets and Foursquare checkins after the death of Osama bin Laden

"In less than 12 hours since the tweeting began we saw almost 40,000 blog post and news articles and an astounding 2.2 million tweets all talking about Osama Bin Laden. As well, while no surprise that people in the US were talking the most about this event a look at our geo-location map shows us that people all over the world were tweeting about the news.
Some other interesting things that I noticed was that people were making jokes about Foursquare leading to the finding of Bin Laden. As time went on, people started started using Foursquare to check into places associated with the death of Bin Laden. Some people were checking in to the location where Bin Laden was found, while others were checking in to a “Post Osama Bin Laden World”.
By 10am(EST) this morning I was able to find 11,570 tweets that made reference to Foursquare and Bin Laden or were check-in’s tweeted out that were related to Bin Laden."

Yelp has 17m reviews and 50m monthly visitors

"Today the company has surpassed 50 million monthly unique users (as reported by their internal Google Analytics), up from 46 million the month before. And they have a total of 17 million reviews for venues around the world. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman says that the service is seeing a faster rate of growth for both contributions (reviews) and users than it has historically— in Q1, users wrote 2 million reviews, while most quarters average 1 million. In other words, even if some of these other services are gaining traction, it isn’t hurting Yelp."

Over a quarter of a million businesses have claimed their business on Foursquare

"Last year, we introduced the foursquare Merchant Platform to give businesses an easy way to reward their customers and find new ones. We wanted to give merchants a way to learn more about their best customers and start offering Specials to help them get new people into their location.
Now, over a quarter of a million businesses have claimed their business on foursquare. We’ve had everything from mom-n-pop sub shops to thousand-location national chains, and everything in between. And we’ve gotten lots of feedback along the way – about making it easier to create Specials, about different ways people have been growing their business, and about tons of fun ways businesses use foursquare."

4% of online Americans use location-sharing services like Foursquare

"In its first report on the use of “geosocial” or location-based services, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life project finds that 4% of online adults use a service such as Foursquare or Gowalla that allows them to share their location with friends and to find others who are nearby. On any given day, 1% of internet users are using these services.
[...]
Key findings include:
- 7% the adults who go online with their mobile phone use a location-based service.
- 8% of online adults ages 18-29 use location-based services, significantly more than online adults in any other age group.
- 10% of online Hispanics use these services – significantly more than online whites (3%) or online blacks (5%).
- 6% of online men use a location-based service such as Foursquare or Gowalla, compared with 3% of online women."

The demographics of Foursquare - gender split and by-state distribution

On 2nd November 2010 Foursquare visualised checkins at polling stations in the US.
I have taken these checkins - a total of 50,416, and the gender and by-state splits to show the overall US gender and by-state split.
In summary, nearly 60% of users are male, and nearly 50% live in just 6 states - California, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois & Texas
Note - This is clearly an extrapolation - but I believe that it's the closest we've come to seeing the real gender and geographical split of Foursquare.  It may also give an indication of how digitally advanced different states are.

Gender:
58% male, 42% female

Split by state:
California 16%

New York 13%
Pennsylvania 5%
Florida 5%
Illinois 5%
